CPV Codes Explained: Guide for Tender Pros

TenderPulse Team··2 min read

What Are CPV Codes?

The Common Procurement Vocabulary (CPV) is the classification system used across the European Union to describe the subject of public contracts. Every tender published on TED, BOSA, TenderNed, BKMS, or BOAMP uses CPV codes to categorize what's being procured.

CPV codes consist of 8 digits plus a check digit, structured hierarchically:

  • Division (first 2 digits): Broad category, e.g., 72 = IT services
  • Group (first 3 digits): Narrower category, e.g., 722 = Software-related services
  • Class (first 4 digits): Specific type, e.g., 7222 = Software consultancy
  • Category (first 5 digits): Detailed type, e.g., 72220 = Systems and technical consultancy

Why CPV Codes Matter

When searching for tenders, CPV codes are the most reliable filter. Free-text search can miss relevant tenders due to language differences (a Dutch tender won't use English keywords), but CPV codes are standardized across all EU member states.

How to Find Your CPV Codes

  1. Start broad: Identify your division (first 2 digits)
  2. Narrow down: Explore groups and classes within that division
  3. Monitor multiple codes: Most businesses span 3-10 CPV codes
  4. Check parent codes: A tender for 72220000 (systems consultancy) is also relevant if you monitor 72200000 (software services)

Using CPV Codes in TenderPulse

TenderPulse lets you create filters based on CPV codes. When you set up a filter with CPV codes, you'll automatically receive alerts when matching tenders are published across all five data sources — TED, BOSA, TenderNed, BKMS, and BOAMP.

Pro tip: Combine CPV codes with country and value range filters for the most targeted results.
